Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka is a musician, researcher and sound artist  currently living in Graz and Linz. She studied double bass, musicology  and contemporary music practice in Dresden, Rostock and Graz and has a PhD in music research from KUG Graz. Her research focuses on listening and embodied perception in musical performance, musical instrumentality, auditory media histories and audiovisuality. Besides participating in international research projects, she has published a monograph on listening in contemporary music theatre (2026, wolke Verlag Berlin). Since 2025, she works at the Arts University Linz as research coordinator and lecturer.

As double bass player she specializes on contemporary chamber music and improvisation and is co-founder and member of Ensemble Schallfeld, an award-winning international chamber ensemble for contemporary music. In her creative sound practice she currently explores ecology as a relational process through sound, embodied listening and sonic storytelling, using radio art, sonification, and performance. Her works have been shown at Radio Art Zone Esch, Q-O2 Brussels, Diagonale Filmfestival Graz, DOCLisboa, Wien Modern and musikprotokoll Graz. For her research and artwork she has received the award of the Karlheinz-Stockhausen Foundation (2012), Grazer Kunstpreis (2021), Theodor Körner Award for art & science (2018), and Steirischer Landesmusikpreis (2023, with ensemble Schallfeld).
